The improvement in public health infrastructure and healthcare facilities has improved life-expectancy globally. With ever-increasing and ageing populations, there has been a rise in elderly suffering from heart disease. The stress of heart ailments and accessibility to immediate care often limits the abilities of these people to carry out daily activies independently, including necessary exercise routines. The reliance on caregivers round the clock is also a deflating experience.
koi was a wearable device conceptualized as a clinical grade heart-rate monitor prescribed by a clinician for patients with heart disease. The device was designed to regularly monitor ecg readings and maintain a data record and analytics on a cloud server for the clinician. The device also supported sos access to clinicians and caregivers in case of an arrhythmia. The purpose of this device was to allow patients to live independent lives while being reassured of immediate access to care when required.
The design requirements at the early stages of conceptualization involved developing a fitment model with ECG electrodes, components of a digital touch-based smartwatch, and an SOS button. Further solutions were required to minimize the noise in ECG readings due to hair, sweat and improper contact with the skin. The product also required styling inputs comparable with existing consumer smartwatches without appearing too sterile or clinical.
